|Anita Desai is an Indian novelist and short story writer, widely acclaimed for her insightful portrayal life of the inner life of her female characters. She was born in Mussoorie, a hill station situated in north of Delhi. She is the daughter of a Bengali businessman, DN Mazumdar, her mother was of German origin. She started writing in English at the tender age of seven and got her first story at the age of nine. Desai made her debut as a novelist with The Peacock in 1963. It was followed by Voices of the City and many more. She has worked for some films, as well that have won immense acclaim worldwide.
