Ali Akbar Khan

Ali Akbar Khan, popularly known as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, was born on 14th April, 1922 in a village of Shibpur (presently in Bangladesh). He is a master of the sarod and learnt vocal as well as instrumental music. At the age of 22, Ali Akbar Khan became the court musician of the royal family of Jodhpur.
In 1956, Khan established the Ali Akbar College of Music in Calcutta. In 1958, he established another institution with the same name in Berkeley, California. Later in 1985, he established a branch of Ali Akbar College of Music in Basel, Switzerland. He has been awarded the Padma Vibhusan in 1989, MacArthur Genius Grant in 1991 and the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship of National Endowment for the Arts in 1997.
